To drive or fly from CLE?
Driving I90/I94 to northern Idaho is 2041 miles one way. Taking I80 to Boise area in the south is about same distance. I'm looking at (assuming gas prices stay around 3.65/gal). at about $550.00 bucks in gas for getting there and back with about a tank left over to drive around in Idaho getting to trail heads and re-supply points.
According to Priceline.com a round-trip flight for two passengers from CLE to BOI averages around $420.00 the car rental would average around $150.00/week. Tossing in a tank of gas at $50.00 we're looking at $770.00.
The biggest downside to driving is it takes 1 day and 9 hours to get to Boise. My natural cheapness is pushing me toward driving. I think we could make it fun by camping at National Forests along the way.

Idaho Weather
According to this site:
Idaho enjoys a four-season climate, but weather conditions can be unpredictable, especially in the higher elevations of the mountains.
Along the Snake River Plain (or Valley) summers are generally warm (seldom hot). Evenings are cool, and July and August are considered perfect by most. In late fall the weather is much cooler and winter conditions can be snowy and much colder.
Across the southern reaches of the Snake River Plain summer high temperatures average near 75 degrees, while winter highs are in the low-40s. The average annual rainfall here approaches 26 inches.
In the mountains across the entire state weather conditions are cooler throughout the year, with cold and snowy conditions fall and winter.
The average summer high temperature across the State of Idaho is right at 64 degrees, dropping to around 30 degrees in winter.
